The purpose of a deep onshore well is firstly, to get through the volcanic sequence and to confirm if there are siliciclastic sandstones and source rocks, but also what kind of basement is hiding below the volcanic cover. The plan is also to find out what age the oldest volcanic strata has.
Even though there have been drilled several deep wells in the volcanic covered area of the Faroese territory, no well has yet penetrated the volcanic sequence. The knowledge of what is hiding below the volcanic sequence is of high interest for future hydrocarbon exploration in the Faroese area, as good sediments and source rocks are important conditions for hydrocarbon plays to exist. The plan is also to investigate if such a well can be constructed so it subsequently can produce sustainable energy.
